Tribble in Paradise at Region 3 Summit 2023

The Embassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Brooks Hotel & Spa was the place to be for Region 3’s Summit held September 8-10 in San Antonio, Texas! There were over 90 Star Trek fans registered for this annual summit including representatives from 11 Region 3 chapters. These chapters included: USS Comanche, USS Corsair, USS Diamondback, ISS Kidd, USS Raptor, USS Zavala including 5 chapters based in the San Antonio area: USS Battle Born, USS Bexar, USS Crockett, USS Masamune, USS Tarvos.

VIP’s included Commander and Vice Commander of STARFLEET, STARFLEET Chief of Information Services, Chief of Staff, Commandant of STARFLEET Marine Corps (SFMC), and more. Delegates from the Klingon Empire in attendance were the Imperial Klingon Vessels (IKV) Logh Veng, IKV Suvwl’ ta’, IKV noHpuq, and Qu’Rac Embassy from the Klingon Assault Group (KAG).

The USS Crockett hosted this year’s summit with a “Tribble in Paradise ” theme and an opportunity to roleplay to determine who ultimately got to settle on New San Antonio.  Attendees were greeted with summit swag bags stuffed with a tribble, Spock keychain, schedule, summit sticker, and more.

STARFLEET, Region 3, and Third Brigade QuarterMaster (QM) items were available at the registration table and auction room. They had collectible coins, fiesta medals, coasters, pips/rank, keychains, and more for sale. These items are still available through your QM.

During Opening Ceremonies, the Commander of STARFLEET (CS) and Region 3 Coordinator (RC) recognized members for their work in the organization at the fleet, region, and chapter level. There were also several promotions handed out over the weekend. The most touching part of the Opening Ceremony was the Final Mission honoring the members we have lost in STARFLEET and KAG.

Afterwards, Sergeant Major of the SFMC Steven Sardeson and Commander Laura Sardeson renewed their vows for their 25th Anniversary at the summit.

Visitors to New San Antonio socialized and enjoyed panel presentations on costuming, San Antonio and the Space Program, a fireside chat with the new Region 3 Coordinator, Jason Davis, and learned more about KAG and how to develop your character. There were also debate sessions between the Federation and KAG to decide New San Antonio’s fate.

SFMC Third Brigade Marine Dress Mess was a hit-literally! Featuring games focused on fostering teamwork created by the ISS Kidd’s CMDR Tracy Clark. The final challenge pitted two teams against each other attempting to pass a small tribble on a tablespoon then getting it in a basket, while flag officers shot Nerf darts at them.

The highlight of Admiral’s Banquet Dinner was the auction. The Silent and Live auctions had plenty of cool Star Trek collectibles for everyone. Overall the auctions raised over $2,000 for the San Antonio Food Bank.

During the closing ceremonies, a final vote was held to see who ‘won’ New San Antonio. The Klingons were victorious, so we look forward to a gagh stand on every block coming soon to the planet.
